2) Where the Longbow came from (and why yew matters)
The Longbow matured in England and Wales, often taller than its archer.
Yew wood’s hard heartwood + springy sapwood made a natural “bi-material” spring.
With years of practice, archers could keep up 8–10 shots per minute,
pinning cavalry at 150–250 m and still biting plate seams farther out.
- Draw weight: ~100–160 lb (reconstructions suggest some bows above this)
- Effective mass volley: devastating at 150–200 m; harassing out to 300 m+
- Training load: high—bone changes found in veteran archers’ skeletons
Medieval statutes even mandated Longbow practice on Sundays. It was skill, policy, and culture rolled into one weapon.
3) Why the Crossbow took cities (and castles)
The Crossbow turned muscle into mechanism.
A horizontal bow on a stock with a trigger meant: hold aim, breathe, squeeze.
Steel prod + windlass/cranquin could reach very high draw forces—well beyond a human pull.
Anyone trained for a few weeks could hit a man-sized target reliably.
- Rate of fire: typically ~1 shot per minute (faster with lighter prods)
- Effective range: 200–400 m (accurate aimed shots at long distance)
- Typical users: mercenaries, town militias, castle garrisons
If the Longbow was elite craft, the Crossbow was mechanical equalizer.
4) Field test — Crécy (1346)
At Crécy, English Longbow units (many Welsh) fired from higher ground.
A rainstorm had slackened Genoese Crossbow strings; pavises lagged behind.
English archers delivered 8–10 arrows per minute per man; in a single minute, tens of thousands of shafts fell.
Crossbowmen, reloading at roughly 1 per minute, broke formation under that storm.
Cavalry charges crashed into bodies and mud. The day—and the myth—went to the Longbow.

In 1139 the Second Lateran Council railed against the Crossbow for use on Christians—
not because it was unchivalrous, but because it shattered knightly privilege.
Longbow did the same by different means: a trained commoner could erase a noble’s charge from 200 m away.
7) Mechanics in plain words
- Longbow: big spring + human rhythm. Elastic energy reloads as fast as you can nock. Volley fire multiplies fear.
- Crossbow: stored energy in steel + trigger. You buy time to aim. The price is reload time.
In tests with reconstructed gear, both can defeat mail and vulnerable plate areas; the Longbow’s edge is volume, the Crossbow’s edge is control.
8) Tech upgrades that changed the score
- Crossbow: windlass/cranquin, steel prods, spanning belts—stronger shots, safer aim.
- Longbow: better arrowheads (bodkins), standardized shafts, disciplined volley drills.
By the late 15th century, hand-gonnes and arquebuses joined the party. The bow age dimmed, but its habits—ranks, volleys, logistics—taught gunpowder armies how to breathe.
9) How commanders actually used them
- Longbow blocks: forward stakes, angled flanks, rain of arrows to break momentum, then melee.
- Crossbow teams: pavise shield + loader/shooter pair; in sieges, patient shots at officers, engineers, and exposed joints.
Right tool, right terrain. On a muddy field, Longbow. On stone, Crossbow.
